University of Central Lancashire
The University of Central Lancashire, or UCLan as it is called, began as the Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1828. UCLan received its university status in 1992. In 2010, the University of Lancashire earned recognition in the QS World Rankings. UCLan was the first modern university in the UK to earn such accolades.
UCLan also ranks high with its students. In 2012, the Times Higher Education polled over 14,000 undergraduates from UK universities. UCLan ranked second best out of all Northwest UK institutions and 38th out of all UK universities. Of particular note, students gave the University of Central Lancashire positive marks for its student/teacher relationships and library facilities.
In the most recent RAE, 17 UCLan programmes earned ‘international excellence’ ratings, and 11 of those 17 were recognised as ‘world leading’. The ‘world leading’ programmes were Allied Health Professions and Studies; Archaeology; Architecture and the Built Environment; Business and Management Studies; Communication, Cultural, and Media Studies; History; Linguistics; Nursing and Midwifery; Physics; Psychology; and Social Work and Social Policy and Administration.
The University of Central Lancashire admits over 2,000 international students annually from over 100 countries to its Preston, Lancashire campus. UCLan has recently opened an international campus in Cyprus, and has partnerships with educational institutions in 125 countries around the world.
City of Preston, Lancashire
The city of Preston, Lancashire sits on the Northwest coast and the River Rubble in England. Preston has a population of 132,000 people in its city centre and outer lying areas. Preston was awarded city status during Her Majesty the Queen’s 50th jubilee celebration. Preston dates back to the Roman period and became an industrial town in the 20th century. Preston is home to several parks and nature reserves, as well as four museums. Preston has an excellent transportation system allowing people easy access in and out of the city and around the UK.
