UK 1-year top-up degree for polytechnic students

A top-up degree allows you to top-up your polytechnic diploma or private college advanced diploma to a Bachelor’s degree (honours) in the UK in just 1 year. You will be either joining the 3rd year class directly or the class could be specially designed to let you complete the degree in 1 year.

Pros & Cons of studying a top-up degree

It’s a demanding course, as you normally need to finish your final year essay/project during this 1- year program as well as attend classes for several other modules at the same time. It’s challenging for some students, but it can be quite rewarding, as you can save 1 year of tuition fees and living expenses compared to studying the degree from year 2.

The universities who offer top-up degree are not ranked as highly as Russell Group universities. After completing the top-up degree, you can always apply to a Master’s degree at another university. You could aim for those highly-ranked universities, including Russell Group universities if you score 2nd upper class or 1st class in the top-up degree. You could also choose to work if employment opportunities arise.

We think a top-up degree is good for those who have tight budget, or those who wish to receive a Bachelor’s degree sooner and have the flexibility to work or continue studying in the future.
