What Is a Creative Writing Degree?
A degree in creative writing will equip you with all the skills you need to write professionally. Creative writing leads to careers in publishing and proofreading as well as screen writing, journalism and poetry. Increasingly, creative writing graduates are employed in marketing industries in roles such as SEO writers, copywriters or social media specialists.
What will I study?
During your three-year Creative Writing degree you will study fiction, non-fiction, screen writing and poetry. You will study and critique others’ writing, whilst constantly improving your own. Students are given the opportunity to experience many different strands of creative writing, for example; song writing or blogging. You can also acquire practical skills such as proofreading and shorthand which will help you to get started in this competitive industry.

The first year covers practical skills in writing by using classroom exercises to encourage self-reflection and improvement. Plot devices and techniques such as dialogue, imagery and character development are introduced. You will undertake modules in cultural history which will provide useful background and context for some of the most well-renowned creative texts. In the summer, students have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in publishing or education.
Second year students study non-fiction writing (including travel writing and memoirs) alongside drama and poetry. In the spring, you will choose elective modules which range from ‘American literature’ to ‘writing for young adult readers’. At the end of this year, you will be required to submit a medium-length piece in the genre of your choosing.
In your final year, you take two elective modules and will be required to submit a project for each.
