What Is a Graphic Design Degree?
A graphic designer will work on websites, adverts, magazines, billboards, logos, packaging and displays to give organisations a visual brand. A graphic designer will usually work to a brief and develop creative visual ideas for the clients’ needs. This course can lead to careers in design, illustration, branding, advertising and other creative industries.
Students who love working with design using computer-related tools are well-suited to pursue their degree in graphic design. This ever-changing and growing field offers students the opportunity to apply their art to several different mediums.
What will I study?
Through the study of graphic design you will learn the technical skills required to work across a range of sectors. You will learn about print, letterpress, bookmaking and 3D design and you’ll use the latest technology and Adobe software. You will collaborate with related disciplines such as architecture and engineering, in order to understand the full capabilities of a graphic designer.
In the first year you will be offered an introduction to the theories, processes and practises associated with graphic design. This will include research skills; strategies and techniques; theory and practise; context communication and audience, and application.
The second year will allow a more personalised approach whilst you explore and apply your own ideas to practical projects. You might choose electives in illustration; motion graphics; branding & identity; motion graphics or ethics to enhance your learning.
The third year will consolidate your learning and prepare you for employment or further study. You will be encouraged to develop and showcase your own specialist project and you may select units such as collaboration; entrepreneurial practice or professional practice to strengthen and enhance your prior knowledge.
